It’s that time of year again when the sun is out and so are you. Sunscreen is a must when the heat is on and should be applied often throughout the day. However, with all of the options at the drugstore for sunscreens, you may be wondering which is really the best one? The one you make yourself, of course!
Many of the sunscreens found in the store contain harmful ingredients that may even increase the risks associated with sun exposure. This recipe is safe, effective, and best of all, you will actually know what’s in it.
What natural ingredients are effective in sun protection? There are many natural ingredients that are effective in blocking the sun’s harmful rays, therefore preventing skin cancer and premature aging.
Red raspberry seed oil is perhaps the most effective in preventing sun damage with the highest SPF (sun protection factor) of the natural oils, with an SPF of 28-50. The range is due to the oil’s quality. Red raspberry seed oil is also full of Vitamin E, which protects cells from free-radical damage and signs of aging, and polyphenols, which are effective antioxidants.
Carrot seed oil can also be used in your homemade sunscreen, with a natural SPF of 38-40.
Wheatgerm oil (SPF 20) is another excellent choice, and is also packed with natural goodies such as Vitamins E, K, and B.
Soybean oil has a natural SPF of 10, while macadamia oil’s SPF is around 6, and jojoba oil finishes at SPF 4.
Zinc oxide is another natural ingredient to be considered and is one of the most effective ingredients in blocking harmful UVA/UVB rays. However, zinc oxide is also a photocatalyst, which means if the size of the particle is too small, it can cause free radicals and damage surrounding cells when exposed to UV light. This problem is easily avoided if you use a non-nano zinc oxide.
Gather the following items:
- 1 ounce of any of the oils listed above (or combination thereof). Aside from red raspberry seed oil, most oils do not protect against UVA rays; to get protection from both UVA and UVB, it is best to combine those oils with a non-nano zinc oxide.
- 1 ounce cocoa butter, coconut oil, or shea butter
- 1 ounce beeswax (for waterproof protection)
- 5-10 drops of any essential oil(s) you prefer
Combine all ingredients and place in a glass jar. Fill a saucepan with a couple of inches of water, and place it on the burner on medium heat. Lightly cap the jar, but do not seal it closed. Place the jar in the pan with the water. As the jar becomes warm and the ingredients soften, carefully mix the ingredients until smooth. Carefully remove from heat and let the jar cool to room temperature.
You can enjoy your homemade sunscreen all summer long! Remember, it is very important to apply sunscreen every few hours. Sunscreen should be immediately applied again after being in the water or sweating.
